Overview / Oorsig

In ds.

Riverside Private Hotel was opened at the end of 1943 by Mr. van Deurs (Faan) Eksteen rented and converted into a residence for girls. April 1945 the Dutch Reformed Church Riviersonderend church council buys the building and the open yard next to it. They turned it into a well-appointed Church Residence and it was opened in early 1947.

In ds. GJN Maas ‘discussion in November 1958 of changing and improving the old girls’ residence to turn it into a home for the elderly, the church council accepted the institution as “the honor of the congregation”. In early February 1959, the church council heard that the name “Overberg Tehuis” had been decided upon for the place. The increasing number of applications for admission to the home necessitates its substantial expansion. In April 1972, the start of the new section of the Overberg Tehuis began on the open plot next door.

According to the title deed T30508 of 1982 dated 18 August 1982, erven 448 and 20 will be merged and henceforth known as erf 502 Riviersonderend. This gives Overberg Tehuis the capacity of 3,966 square meters of land.

30 August 1982 the building application is submitted to enlarge the Overberg Tehuis. By 1986, the demolition of Goodyear House had begun and it was hoped that the expansion project at the Home would begin soon. Unfortunately, it was during this period that building projects were scaled down and Rev. Pretorius informed the church council in August 1990 that no action could be taken. The Church Council then decided that the plans should be reviewed and that the old part of the Home that was already dilapidated should be demolished and a single-storey building should be erected in its place. It had to provide for proper accommodation for staff, a recreation room for the residents, accommodation for the same number of elderly people as was housed in the old part, as well as adequate facilities for frail elderly people. April 1992 the building work begins after approval has been obtained and a letter has been received from GHBM (22/04/92)
